I also lust after a hobbyist spectrum analyzer. There are several modifications of Rigol equipment described on the Internet, including at least two software conversions to give spectrum analyzer functionality. You can't have enough scopes, can you? On-T or Off-T, I can't get over the decision s to rename HP to Agilent, much less to Keysight, as if the name makes much difference in capital purchasing.

If anything sounds like a cheap Asian import, it is Keysight. Most important, I wonder what a struggling HP paid consultants to find that name. Nobody would be crazy enough to try and sell a fake DSZ, especially not Tequipment. I'm just hoping that mine comes with probes. I already own a Rigol MSOA and it's been a good scope, the serial decode is a bit slow but it does the job.

If you look at Dave's teardown of the DSZ you'll see that the input is entirely built of discrete components. What do you think the chances are that all those random combinations of parts fed off reels in the pick and place machine will all combine to meet the MHz spec of a DSZ?

Do you really think that Rigol will rework all the units that don't quite meet the DSZ specs? If they do, why don't they sell license keys to upgrade the BW?

They are built to sell at the lowest possible price. Lots of people have "hacked" the scopes to be " MHz BW". I've not seen anyone demonstrate that the result actually has that bandwidth. However, Leo Bodnar has an excellent little fast edge pulser for sale which will allow you to measure what you got from the factory and what you have after the "hack". It's supposed to be a 70 MHz scope.

In fact it does well over MHz, but the top of the step is rather ugly. But it definitely does not meet a MHz spec. Of the three, the DSE has the best step response in my view. The overshoot is a consequence of marketing pushing the BW spec as high as they can get away with. The Rigols are good scopes. Everyone's scope has compromises. But expecting that you can get a MHz scope by buying a 50 MHz scope and "hacking" it is not realistic unless it's a scope for which the vendor sells BW upgrades as license keys.

Either by just showing the Rigol boot screen, or show the standard display but remain immune to any input from the controls. But thankfully I found a solution to my problem. After searching the net, I finally found a way of resetting the oscilloscope to factory settings and get it up and running again.

On the left side of the front panel, there are six dark grey menu select buttons. And the magic one is the fifth from the top. To reset the oscilloscope, just power off and then on the scope, repeatedly pressing the fifth button and the oscilloscope resets to factory settings.

My father, convinced by my glowing reviews of the little wonder scope, went out and bought himself one shortly thereafter. Well, anyway, my father's suggestion and I don't know why he didn't try this with his own scope was to try feeding signals at frequencies above MHz into the scope, and to find out just how high the little thing could go.

And it was, since I have at my disposal an old but excellent Singer CSM-1 service monitor that can generate frequencies in excess of MHz. It's probably a bit out of calibration, but I know from experience that it's no more than 10 or 20 Hz off. Not bad for a machine that's pushing 40 years old. Last night I played around with it a bit, but didn't get real serious about it. Most of what I figured out last night was what trigger settings seemed to work best at higher frequencies.

I also figured out that the scope becomes less sensitive to voltages above MHz. The Singer puts out a consistent voltage, but I had to keep adjusting the vertical scale as I increased frequency.
